Over the past year, representatives of the San Marco Garden Circle and the San Marco Preservation Society have been in discussion with the City parks Department regarding possible equipment changes and additions in the park. The conversation began when the Garden Circle approached Parks about adding a picnic table or benches to the park in the vicinity of the Rose Garden (below) which is maintained by the Garden Circle. The Garden Circle is celebrating their 75th anniversary and wanted to commemorate the occasion by enhancing the park.
As the Department began to look at the site for possible picnic table locations and access, it was apparent that much of the park does not currently meet ADA standards. As discussion progressed regarding the required ADA modifications, Parks met with SMPS to evaluate options for accessible playground equipment that meets current standards but would also be appropriate in scale to the park and retain many of the same elements that are available today. For example, while the existing swing unit may be removed, it will be replaced by a new swing unit that is handicap accessible.
