Hens are officially legal!

The Council recently approved legislation that allowed residential chicken-keeping in the City. The program requires those wishing to participate to attend training and obtain a permit. No roosters are allowed. The ordinance came at the end of a year-long pilot program under which a limited number of permits were issued and the process tested. There were NO complaints regarding any permit holder during the course of the year and as a result, the program was formalized throughout the City. A number of neighborhoods were excluded at their request,  and the ordinance contains opt-in and opt-out provision that allow additional neighborhoods to opt-out and the excluded neighborhoods to opt-in if 50% plus one of property owners in the neighborhood wish to do so.

I do continue to receive complaints about stray chickens and in particular roosters in some areas, but none of these were associated with any permitted  use.
